OUTCOME

Gamification shipped to 50k+ active users.

Hypothesis

Integrating gamification elements, such as quests, milestones, points, badges, and streaks, will increase user engagement and motivation. Specifically, we hypothesize that these game mechanics will make the process of tracking nutrition, exercise, and wellness goals more interactive and fun, leading to a higher frequency of app usage and more consistent adherence to personal health goals. This increased engagement and motivation are expected to contribute to improved health outcomes for Burnalong users, as they are more likely to maintain a regular wellness routine when they find the process rewarding and enjoyable.

What are Quests?

Quests are long-term engagements, possibly spanning several weeks or months. Quests often include a storyline or theme that adds a narrative layer, making the experience immersive. They involve a series of tasks or objectives that must be completed in a specific order, often building in complexity.

Next Steps
Now that we have a grasp on what quests are, let’s take a look at the user stories that both my PM and I worked on together.

User Stories

Once our team received approval from Burnalong on which user stories to mainly focus on, I went to the drawing board and brainstormed different types of quest stories we could potentially go forth with.

Brainstorm

You will see that I decided to steer away from character quest stories and more towards ‘real-life’ stories, and also include Burnalong’s mascot “b”.

There are two types of quests that a user can select to complete: step and class quests.
By completing step quests, a user can earn a badge as well as up to 40 points. Whereas, in a class quest, a user can only earn a badge. Once they join a quest, they have the option to leave and start over.

Impact

Burnalong users across the U.S. actively use the quest gamification feature. Achieving higher user retention rates and increased engagement with content.
